Katherine Sprinkles

Katherine Haley Burkhart Sprinkles, age 62 of Harlan, KY passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born August 11, 1949 in Harlan, KY. She was a homemaker and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

Katherine is preceded in death by her mother, Louise Mason Haley; and her sister, Debra Bowman Bailey.

Survivors include her father, Charles Haley and his wife Frances of Lower Elcomb; her 3 children, Ricky Burkhart and wife Sheila of Stanfill, Deena Charles and husband Tony of Caball Estates, and Shanni Kazy and husband Billy of Rosspoint; her brother, Robert Haley and wife Thelma of Catrons Creek; 6 grandchildren, Tyler Burkhart, Dawson Charles, Masie Charles, Payeton Charles, MeKenna Kazy, and Braylee Kazy; and her special friend, Doris West of Tway. Several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Mount Pleasant Funeral Home with the Rev. Josh Hensley officiating.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Resthaven Cemetery in Keith, KY with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will also be held on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 from 5p.m. until the funeral hour at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.

Earl Jones


Earl French Jones, age 83 of Sunny Acres, KY, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born March 10, 1929 in Mary Helen, KY to the late Earl Lee Jones and Myrtle Smith. A veteran in the U.S. Army, he was employed by Kentucky Utilities for 28 years. He retired as a coal miner. Earl was a life- long resident of Harlan, KY and believed in the Methodist faith.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister Faye Brock; his brother, Chuck Jones; his son, Kelly Jones and infant son; his first wife, Jackie Jones.
He is survived by his wife Linda Jones; two step-children, D.J. Creech and girlfriend Olivia Smith and Tiffany Creech all of Harlan; two grandsons, Chad Jones of Jeffersonville, IN and Bryson Bryant of Harlan, KY; two brothers, Harry Jones and wife Jenny of Harlan, KY and Bucky Jones and wife Norma of Teetersville, KY; sister-in-law, Barbara Jones of Teetersville, KY; a special friend, Kat Stacey of Harlan, KY; and a host of nieces, nephews, and many more friends also survive.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Mount Pleasant Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Landis officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in Keith, KY with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Military rites will be provided by the Harlan County Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 27, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.

Betty Simms

 

Betty Joyce Simms, 87, of Harlan passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at the Harlan Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Betty was born to the late Vedis Troglin Makoski and Luther Martin Sims at Dunlap, TN on November 28, 1924. Besides her parents, one sister, Eula Sims Jones, preceded her in death.

She was a teller at the Bank of Harlan for 35 years, working until she was 80 years of age in 2004. She also worked for the Coca Cola Bottling Company and was secretary and store manager for Cardinal Gem Coal Company for 20 years.

Betty is survived by one brother, Charles L. (Louise) Sims, Alexandria, VA; four nieces: Joyce (Charles) Berger, Rosspoint, KY; Diane (Harold) Turner, London, KY; Janet (Claude) Wilson, Fresh Meadows, KY; and Kathy Robinson, South Ridings, VA; one nephew, Chuck (Connie) Sims, Alexandria, VA.

Also surviving are seven great nieces, Robin (Steven) Magnani, Loyall; Betsy (Chet) Williams, Barbados; Lea (Chris) Shaw, Lexington, KY; Whitney Turner, Louisville, KY; Heather (Gene) Fisher, Fresh Meadows, KY; Kara Sims, Alexandria, VA; and Jessica Robinson, South Ridings, VA; four great nephews, C.C. Wilson, Fresh Meadows, KY; Derek Turner, London, KY; Chad and Conner Sims, Alexandria, VA; six great-great nieces: Lexie and Caroline Magnani, Loyall, KY; Callie Wilson, Emma and SaraKate Fisher, Fresh Meadows, KY; and Blakelea Shaw, Lexington, KY; five great-great nephews: Colby Wilson and Tye Patrick, Fresh Meadows, KY; Christian Magnani, Loyall, KY; Stetson, Slade, and Woodson Shaw, Lexington, KY; and three wonderful caregivers: Ann Varney, Diane Helton, and Kim Ealy.

Graveside services for family and friends will be Friday, April 27, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Resthaven Cemetery Chapel with Rev. Brandon Pugh officiating.

Private visitation will be held at Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home for her family.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be given to the Church or charity of your choice in memory of Betty.

Dinah Stem

 

Dinah L. Stem, 64, of Harlan, passed from this life on Monday, April 23, 2012 following an illness. A native of Kenvir, Dinah left the area after high school and began a career with the IBM Corporation which spanned five decades. Her work took her to many different parts of the country as well as the world, allowing her to become well versed in international travel. She served as president of Sincerely Santa in Tampa, Florida for 10 years, bringing joy and happiness to countless underprivileged children.

Dinah was an avid UK Wildcat fan and had attended several Final Four's over the years. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church where she was active in Reformers Unanimous, as well as other church functions.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Maynard Bates and Flora Tolliver Bates; and by siblings, Bobby, Claude, Mary, Betty, Rosa and three as infants.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph H. Stem; a son, Joseph Dickens Stem, of Florida; a step-son, Joseph David Stem, of California; two sisters, Della Martin, of Harlan; Jean Hall, of Knoxville; three brothers, Bill Bates, of Kenvir; Frank Bates and Ed Bates, both of Knoxville; and two step-grandchildren, Jameson and Reina. Also surviving are a host of other friends and church family.

Visitation for Dinah will be from 5 -7 pm Thursday at Immanuel Baptist Church.

Funeral services will follow at 7 pm with the Reverend Arnold Martin officiating.

Edd Cottrell

 

Ed "Big Boy" Cottrell, Jr. was born April 15, 1931 to Ed Cottrell and Atlonia Edwards Cottrell in Greensboro, AL. and moved with his mother, father, brother and sister to Verda, KY. At an early age "Big Boy" became a coal miner and worked at different mines in the county before retiring from U.S. Steel in Lynch, KY. Ed gave his life to the Lord and joined MT. Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor, Thomas Cook. Ed married the late Lillie Mae Summers and was a father to her son Nathaniel McClendon who later passed away.

Ed was preceded in death in addition to his parents, wife and step-son, one sister, Ada Cottrell Robinson; and one aunt, Geraldine Evans.

He leaves to cherish his memory one brother, Luther Jack Cottrell, Harlan; and one sister Lula Fields, Harlan; one sister-in-law Missouri Cottrell, Lexington; and a special companion, Melissa Adams. Also surviving is a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins who loved him dearly and he loved each and every one of them.

Visitation will be conducted Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 12 Noon until 2 PM at the Mount Olive Baptist Church.

Funeral services will follow at 2 PM at the church with the Reverend Walter Garlington officiating. Burial will follow in Evarts Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Cottrell, Daniel Cottrell, Derek Cottrell, Samuel Fluker, Reggie Young, Randy Fields.
