Mrs. Dora Belle Wilson, 95, of Evarts entered Heaven’s eternal gates Monday, May 4, 2015, at her home. Born April 21, 1920 in Packard, KY, she had lived here most of her life. Dora led a very active and rewarding life. She was the owner/operator of Dora’s Drive-In Restaurant in Evarts and was involved in other businesses in the Clover Fork area. She was a member of the Black Mountain Baptist Church since 1954 and was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Wilson; her parents, Ike Shumate and Lillie Lively Shumate; a son, Bill Jack Wilson; a brother, Walter Shumate; five sisters, Wanda Jackson, Ura Leach, Jeanette Flath, Fannie Tipton and Ima Ball; and a granddaughter, Allison Lewis.
Survivors include three children, Rodney Wilson and wife, Linda, Kenvir; Clarinda Phillips and husband, Mack, Knoxville; Alice Greene and husband, Richard, Knoxville; seven grandchildren, Marilyn Williamson, Robin Shanks, Jimmy Ellenburg, Sandy Mefford Sawyer (Greg), Kellie Wilson Lee (Scott), Tracy King (Ronnie) and Mark Lewis; nine great-grandchildren, Joshua Shanks, Jordan Ellenburg, Larry Williamson, Kyle and Eric Mefford, Kalie and Maddie King, Bryson and Daria Lee; four great-great-grandchildren, Braydon, Caydon, Braxton and Rayce Shanks; and a host of other family and friends.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 6, 2015, from 5 until 7 pm at the Evarts Funeral Home.
Funeral services will begin at 7 pm with the Reverend Dallas Messer and the Reverend Roy Faulkner officiating. Eastern Star rites will be performed. Her burial will be Thursday at 1 pm at the Resthaven Cemetery with members of Evarts Masonic Lodge #897 serving as pallbearers.

Madison Edward “Ed” Tye, 78, of Harlan, KY passed away May 3, 2015 at the Veteran’s Hospital, Cooper Dr., Lexington, KY. He was born August 24, 1936 in Whitley Co., KY to the late Paul Edward and Lora Betty Alsip Tye. Ed was a beloved member of the Mount Pleasant Funeral Home family/staff for many years where he retired as a driver and attendant. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints. Ed was a veteran of the United States Army.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by daughter, Vanda Sue Tye.
Survivors include, wife Virginia Tye, of Harlan, children, Michael Edward Tye and wife, Jennifer, of Bardo, Ricky Allen Tye and wife, Lisa, of Sunshine, Regina Lynn Cooper and husband, Kevin, of Harlan, brothers Jimmy Tye and wife, Marlene, and Johnny Tye and wife, Sharron, both of Corbin, 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 5 from 5 to 7pm at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home.
Funeral will follow at 7PM in the chapel of Mount Pleasant with Pres. Sam Gilbert officiating. Burial will be Wednesday, May 6 at 11AM at the Park Howard Cemetery, Wallins, KY with the Harlan County Honor Guard performing the presentation of the flag.
Farmer Ray Hoskins
Farmer Ray Hoskins, 76 of Harlan, KY died Thursday, April 30, 2015 at the Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital. Born in Bell County, Kentucky he was the son of the Late Robert and Cledith Hoskins. He was a retired driver for Hensley Trucking. He was a member of the Kelly Street Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hoskins was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby and Bill Hoskins and one sister, Kathleen Gambrel.
He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Turner Hoskins of Harlan; children, Paul Ray (Nicole) Hoskins of Putney and Deborah Kay (Elgie) Hoskins Green of Harlan; grandchildren, Derrick (Alex) Hoskins of Putney, Nicholas Hoskins of Harlan, Kelly Beth Hoskins of Putney, Blair Green of Harlan, Blaine Green of Middlesboro; and brother, Archie Hoskins of Middlesboro.
Visitation will be Saturday, May 2, 2015 from 5:00-7:00 PM in the chapel of Anderson-Laws and Jones Funeral Home. Funeral Services will follow the visitation at 7:00 P.M. The Rev. Herbie Hoskins and Rev. Seth Carmical will officiate the services. Music will be provided by Seth Carmical. Interment will be private.
Evelyn Greene Thorne, 84, of Ages, passed away Friday, May 1, 2015, at her home. Born July 3, 1930 in Ages, Evelyn had lived here most of her life. She was a homemaker and believed in the Holiness faith.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Thorne; her parents, Bill Greene and Louise Osborne Greene; and one brother, Ernest Greene.
Survivors include five children, Linda Holden, Indianapolis, IN; Mike Thorne and wife, Cheryl, Wallins; Sheila Cornett and husband, Junior, Florence; and Patsy Thorne and Jeffrey Thorne, both of Ages. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Jo Anna Leaderbrand and husband, Tony; Julianna Kaye Schaefer and husband, Brian; Rebecca Reynolds and husband, Mark; Amanda Saylor; Keith Saylor; Adrianna Eldridge and husband, Tony; and Aaron Mullins; nine great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
Visitation will Sunday, from 3 until 7 PM at the Ages Free Pentecostal Church with a church service at 7 PM.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 4, 2015, at 1 PM at the Ages Free Pentecostal Church with the Reverend Jesse Kinder and the Reverend Perry Long officiating. Burial will follow in the Evarts Memorial Gardens with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Evelyn’s three great-grandsons.
Ronnie Bennett, 59, of Evarts, passed from this life on Friday, May 1, 2015 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center following an illness. He was born May 9, 1955 in Harlan County and was a lifelong resident here. Ronnie worked for many years at Georgia-Pacific and Forest Products saw mill as a loader operator and lumber grader. He was a self-employed carpenter as well. He was a U.S. Marine Corp veteran and was a Sunday school teacher, active with the youth group, baseball coach and a route carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley Bennett and Emeline Hembree Bennett; two sisters, Reva Middleton and Faye Bennett; and two brothers, Bill and Wayne Bennett.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Esther Stewart Bennett, of Evarts; five daughters, Emeline Cole and husband Brandon, of Evarts; Ronda Bennett, of Evarts; April Wilson and husband Shantwan, of Middlesboro; Stephanie Vick and husband Jeremy, of Evarts; and Hannah Bennett, of Evarts; four grandchildren, Reagan Somers, Alivia Simmons, Julia Bennett and Madison Vick; four brothers, Jim Bennett, Lejunior; Leroy Bennett and wife Diane, of Versailles; Glen Bennett, Lejunior; and Charles "Bubby" Bennett, Harlan; and three sisters, Charlene Smith and husband Kenneth, Barbourville; Shirley Hurst, Lejunior; and Easter Napier and husband Clayton, Dizney.
Visitation will be from 5 - 8 pm Monday at Evarts Funeral Home, then after 5 pm Tuesday at the North Evarts Baptist Church. Funeral service will be conducted at 1 pm Wednesday, (May 6) at the church with the Reverend Cecil Baird officiating. Burial will follow at Evarts Memorial Gardens with Military Rites presented by the Harlan Honor Guard. Pallbearers will include Brandon Cole, Jeremy Vick, Shantwan Wilson and Sammy Stewart. David Lewis, age 71, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2015, at his residence in Lynch, KY. He was born February 17, 1944 to the late Floyd and Chelca Shepherd Lewis in Harlan County, KY.
David served his country proudly in the United States Army and was disabled.
He is survived by his children, Harold Lewis of Delphia, Elsie Cornett and Tammy Johnson of Cumberland, Donna Lewis of Whitesburg, and David Leon Lewis of Harlan; and a host of other family and friends. A memorial service will be held at a later date for Mr. Lewis.
Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, Rebecca Sue Hensley Tallant, 69, of Corbin, formerly of Harlan County, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at the Cumberland Village Health and Rehabilitation Center in LaFollette, TN. Born November 22, 1945 in Twila, KY, she worked as a beautician and was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church in Corbin, KY.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil Hensley and Leona Brock Hensley.
Rebecca is survived by her husband, David Tallant, Corbin; two sons, David Tallant, Jr. and wife Shanda, Corbin and Tracy Hensley, London; three step-children, Cynthia Langan; Denise Goodyear and husband, Kent Paul; and Scott Hernal Steen, all of Michigan; two sisters, Joyce Lawson and husband Lawrence, Corbin and Barbara Agrossa, Texas; and one brother, Eugene Hensley, Michigan. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a host of friends, family and relatives.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Hopewell Baptist Church in Corbin with funeral services starting at 7 p.m. with Hershell Walker and Pastor Dennis McCoy officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, in the Hensley Cemetery, located in Smith, KY. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
