Ruby Nell Steele, 76, of Florence, KY, formerly of Harlan, entered Eternal Rest on Monday, March 2, 2015 following an illness. She was born August 4, 1938 in Muhlenberg County to the late Amos Lee Steele and Ruth Mae Hulsey Steele. Nell served as a nurse for 38 years at both Wise (Va.) and Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospitals, was a Kentucky Colonel and a former member of the Loyall Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary. She was a Christian and believed in the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, Nell is preceded in death by three sisters, Bette Hemple, Shirley Hoffman and Janice Halcomb.
Survivors include a son, Phillip (P.J.) Collett, Jr., Brookside, KY; two daughters, Beverly Stamm and husband Joe, of Independence, KY; and Debbie Ison Saylor and husband Sam, of Wallins Creek, KY; grandchildren, Drew Freeman, of Atlanta, GA; Kendyl Gilliam, Jackson Stamm and Zachary Stamm, all of Independence, KY.
Visitation will be from 12 – 2 pm Wednesday, March 4, at Harlan Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm with the Reverend Paul White officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Cemetery, Keith, Kentucky.

Walter Murphy Webb, 36, of New Tazewell, TN, formerly of Watts Creek, passed away Saturday, February 28, 2015, at the U.T. Hospital in Knoxville, TN. Born October 11, 1978, in Harlan County, he was and avid fisherman.
Walter is survived by his parents, Verlon Webb, Jr. and Evelyn Farley Webb, New Tazewell, TN; two brothers, Daniel Patrick Farley and wife Tonya, Watts Creek; and Ricky Webb, New Tazewell, TN; one sister, Sabrina Webb, and fiancé, Mark Gilreath, Gate City, VA.; two step-sons, Chase Johns and Shane Johns, Mount Juliet, TN; two nieces, Bridgett Farley and Ginger Lee Gilreath; and two nephews, Coady Webb and Caydon Webb and their brother, Gabe Jones. Also surviving are several aunts and uncles.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2015, in the chapel of Loyall Funeral Home with funeral services starting at 8 p.m. with the Reverend Don Smith officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Asher Cemetery, Watts Creek. Daniel Farley, Eric Simpson, Bryan Gross, Mack Miniard, Kenny Mowery and Mike Helton will serve as pallbearers.
Frank “Rawhide” Scearse, 63 of Baxter, was born on March 13, 1951 at Pine MountainKentucky and died February 28, 2015 at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital.
His parents, Franklin P. Scearse and Arlene “Tena” Begley Scearse, precede him in death.
In addition to his parents his son, Damien Scearse; his sisters, Juanita Cornett and Glessie “Bobbie” Davidson; his brothers, William “Butch” Scearse, Reed Allen Scearse, and James Scearse; also his nephews, Franklin Eugene Scearse, Keith Davidson and Phillip Cornett; his nieces, Sharon Dailey and Amber Kelley precede him in death also.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Elliott Scearse; his son, David Scearse; his brothers and sisters, Earl Tracy and wife, Linda Scearse, Roger Dale and wife, Sandra Scearse, Douglas and wife, Diane Scearse, Janice Kelly, Mallie Scearse, Robert and wife, Joyce Scearse and Margaret Warner. Also four grandchildren, Damien, Zachary, Haley and Bethany; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Memorial services will be Friday, March 6, 2015 at 1 o’clock at Pine Mountain Chapel with Clarence Gaw officiating. Burial will follow at Nolan Cemetery at Pine Mountain. A gathering of family & friends will be from 11AM until 1PM Friday at the Pine Mountain Chapel.
Charlotte A. Clay, age 60 of Cloverlick, entered into Heaven’s gates on Wednesday, February 25, 2015. She was born on June 07, 1954 in Harlan County to the late Kenneth McKnight and Norma Vazzana McKnight Brock. Charlotte spent her life as a homemaker to her family, loved gardening and tending her flowers, and loved her pet grandchildren; boxers, Kolbe, Keisha, Kayne, Kenya, Khamp, Keira, and Loki; coon dog, Magnum. She believed in the Baptist faith.
Other than her father, she is preceded in death by her husband, Barney Clay, Jr.
She will forever missed, by her children, Matthew Clay of Cloverlick and Mary Ann “Pooh” (Bryan) Adams of Delphia; mother, Norma Brock; sisters, Sharon McKnight and Connie Taylor; grandchildren, Lyndsey Adams and Brayden Clay; special friend, Gary Ledford; and host of other family and friends.
Visitation services will be held at the Central Baptist Church in Cumberland, KY on Saturday, February 28, 2015, between 6 – 9 pm. Funeral services will be at the church on Sunday, March 01, 2015, at 11 am with Glenn Cornett, Jonathan Monhollen and Roger Colinger officiating.
Interment will be in the Hall-Clay Cemetery in Cloverlick, KY with family and friends serving as pallbearers and Brayden Clay and Phillip McKnight serving as honorary pallbearers.
David C. Smith
David C. Smith, age 72 of Cloverlick, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 26, 2015, at his residence with family by his side. He was born in Cloverlick, KY on July 12, 1942 to the late Spencer and Belvia Hall Smith. David worked 23 years as a Mine Repairman for Scotia Coal Company and served his country proudly in the United States Army. He loved his grandchildren, gardening, and was a member of the Linefork House of Prayer.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Claude Morris, John Morris, Randy Morris, Hayward Smith, and Gary Smith.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 45 years, Phyllis Polly Smith; daughters, Selena (Condy) Wade of Oklahoma City, OK and Misty (Jack) Turner of Jonesville, VA; brothers, Aaron Morris, Dennis Smith, Jessie Smith, and Larry Smith; sister, Sue Miles; grandchildren, Kedrin Wade, Maya Echeverria, and Macey Turner; step-grandchildren, Alexis and Madeline Turner; sister-in-laws, Ginger Smith and Gayno Smith; and a host of other family and friends.
The family will receive friends in the Tri City Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, February 28, 2015, between 6 – 9 pm. Funeral services will be held in the Chapel on Sunday, March 01, 2015, at 2 pm with Glenn Cornett, Patrick Shepherd, and Mary Bennett officiating. Interment will follow in the Peaceful Acres Cemetery at Hiram, KY with Military Rites at graveside by the Harlan Honor Guard. Pallbearers are Roger Polly, Terry Creech, Dakota Shepherd, Kelvin Polly, Kedrin Wade, and Melvin Hardy.
